COME TO THE GALLERY AND EXPLORE THE DIVERSITY OF EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION WITH JT WINIK
June 11 - 29, 2008
MEET THE ARTIST Saturday, June 14, 2008 2 - 5 pm
A career that began with a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University, Halifax, and a BEd from Western Ontario, has taken JT to Spain, Amsterdam and Mexico to work with artists and to gain international recognition for her work.
After years of success with compositions that were often described as ambiguous narratives,
JT Winik's work turned to taking a closer look at the figure, with a focus on the female form and female sexuality.
More recently Winik's work takes a closer view of the human face.
"A face both reveals and hides, and in any moment it presents a unique and intricate weaving of the lines which connect opposite states. A facial expression is never one thing or another, but a melding of differences."
With this statement we look at her most recent work and note that although some of her subjects are inspired by real people -- all the kings and the Mary Anne series -- others, like Girl With Braids, are faces created from JT's imagination.

What we can see in these dramatic paintings is the emotional complexity and ambiguity of the face that intrigues and suggests a story. The narratives are never clear but draw one to interact and interpret the meaning behind the subject's expression.
"Emotions often conflict, and what is intriguing about the face is exploring the tension between what is shown and what is hidden."
